Outside Assessments
The Visual Studies Initiative’s first focus has been to deepen and broaden the understanding of Visual Studies and Visual Culture as practiced in academic contexts, both in the US and abroad. Towards this end, we have invited several scholars who have played a foundational role in implementing programs and/or have written seminal books on Visual Culture for short visits. During an informal workshop-seminar format, their visits create an intellectual forum for discussion and bi-directional assessment. As part of the process, the visiting scholars provided VSI with assessments of what they see as major strengths, challenges, and opportunities in Duke’s approach to Visual Studies.
