Request for Proposals
The Visual Studies Initiative (VSI) provides funds for faculty or staff research projects. The faculty research grants should foster the key aspects of the visual studies initiative, which can include collaborative and/or interdisciplinary projects, novel approaches towards understanding of the visual, a clear connection between the theory and the practice.
Terms of the Fellowships
The VSI has available up to $15,000 to fund 2-3 research grants each year. Each award is for one year.
Criteria
Proposals will be judged by the following criteria:
- The intrinsic intellectual merit and potential impact on the emergent field of visual studies;
- The interconnection between the visual theory and visual practice;
- The applicant’s ability to perform the work proposed;
- Suitability of the budget.
Eligibility
Applicants must be Duke faculty or staff.
Application Procedure
Proposals should include:
- A narrative no more than 5 pages in length;
- A budget justification no more than 2 pages in length;
- A brief CV of the PI and other applicants.

Proposals are reviewed once per month. Applications stay active for up to four months.
