Graduate Application

2009/2010 Graduate Fellowships – Deadline: Fall 2008 (specific date to be announced Spring 2008)
Request for Proposals

The Visual Studies Initiative (VSI) invites proposals for their graduate fellowship program. The graduate fellowships should foster the key aspects of the visual studies initiative, which can include collaborative and/or interdisciplinary projects, novel approaches towards understanding of the visual, a clear connection between the theory and the practice.

Participating students are expected to present their work in a public forum, such as but not limited to a public seminar, a published paper, an exhibit, a demonstration, a web experience, or a film.

Terms of the Fellowships
The VSI will award up to two $15,000 fellowships each year. Support is for one year, August 1, 2009 – July 31, 2010.

Criteria
Proposals will be judged by the following criteria:

  • The intrinsic intellectual merit and potential impact on the emergent field of visual studies;
  • The interconnection between the visual theory and visual practice;
  • The probability that the work will lead to a long term project, contributing to the dissertion and/or resulting in publication and/or exhibition and/or demonstration

Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled in the Duke Graduate College. Students must have completed their preliminary exams before August 1, 2009.

Application Procedure
Proposals should include:

  • A narrative no more than 5 pages in length;
  • A resources proposal no more than 2 pages in length for all applications consisting of a significant project component. This could include the need for Duke or departmental IT support, software, hardware, or other materials necessary to complete the project.
  • A letter of support from the applicant’s PhD advisor and any other faculty or staff involved in the proposal;
  • A brief CV of the applicant.
